Tracker Academy

Tracker Academy is South Africa’s first formally accredited tracker training institution. It trains young people from rural communities in the traditional skills of tracking, supporting careers in wildlife protection, monitoring, and ecotourism.

Since 2024, SLT and Tracker Academy have worked alongside one another to support the development of professional tracking skills across southern Africa.

This collaboration has taken shape in a number of ways:

  • Ongoing scholarship support through the Singita Lowveld Trust
  • Skills development and mentorship within Singita’s tracking teams

At its heart, this shared work is about recognising the value of traditional tracking knowledge and ensuring it continues to play a meaningful role in conservation and ecotourism.

Key Successes

Several Tracker Academy graduates are now part of the tracking teams at Singita Sabi Sand and Singita Lebombo. Many are working close to the landscapes they grew up in, bringing a depth of understanding that enriches the guest experience and strengthens conservation outcomes.

Some have progressed further into guiding roles, reflecting both the strength of their training and the opportunities for growth within the teams.

A key milestone has been the development of Ruel Ngwenya as a Lead Tracker Evaluator. Through dedicated mentorship and training, Ruel now supports the ongoing development of trackers across Singita’s Lowveld properties, helping to build consistency and confidence across the teams.

This ongoing collaboration reflects a shared belief that conservation is strengthened when local knowledge, skills, and opportunities are supported in a meaningful way.
